Usually I don’t start slacking on vacation posts until the last day, which typically never gets blogged about. I’ve been really fail with the Disney blogging. On Wednesday we went to Disneyland and California Adventure. And ordered room service. Here are some pictures.
Killer Beez Nails
I’ve been anxiously awaiting for today to come so I could sport my Killer Beez nails! I wanted to represent the black and yellow for our annual Friends and Family Night, which is tomorrow. I practiced the design a bit earlier last week. It turned out to be good I did because tonight went off without a hitch.
This design was inspired by the back of the new Beez jerseys, where the material fades from light to dark yellow and the stripes are grunged up. In retrospect I should have taken pictures of each step, because there were quite a few, and watching the progression was really fun.
I started out with two coats of white polish. Once that was dry, I sponged on a white and yellow gradient—twice—cleaning the extra polish off my fingers and cuticles after each coat. (As you can see from the photos, I didn’t do a very good job. I tried, I really did, but it settled into all the dried cracks in my skin and refused to come out, even with pure acetone.) Then I topped it off with a fast drying top coat and let dry for fifteen minutes.
Next came the stripes. I used french manicure stickers to get two clean lines of black. Three would have been nice, but for that either my nails have to be longer or the stickers have to be narrower. Once the black was dry, I sponged a bit of yellow on the tips to get the grunge look and topped with another layer of top coat.
There are a few smudges here and there, but I think over all they turned out great. Probably due to the hour practice I got a few days ago. This took me about two hours from start to finish and rendered me completely useless for tasks such as helping with dinner, taking out the garbage, and doing laundry.

Anaheim – Tuesday 6/26
Day two in Anaheim was sun and adventure filled. Mary and I kicked it off with breakfast from room service. Then we checked out because we had to switch rooms and stowed our bags before heading to Disneyland. We rode some rides and ate some food. Lunch reservations were at the Blue Bayou, which shared an indoor space with Pirates of the Caribbean—the best ride ever because it’s long and air conditioned and we got to sit in a boat.
After lunch we waited in some more ride lines. It got pretty toasty outside as well. I purchased a delicious Mickey Mouse pretzel before getting in line for Indiana Jones Adventure. Between eating, seeing the girl reading Fifty Shades* in line, and briefly listening to the Australian in front of us, the hour passed relatively quickly.
After Indiana Jones Adventure (which was also awesome), we were hot and hungry, so we headed back to the hotel to check in to our new room with the intention of going back to the park later in the evening. We ordered late lunch/early dinner from room service, and I internally cried over the giant blister that had formed under my toe. I think at some point we went to the pool, too.
I wasn’t feeling too hot by the end of the night. Mary went back to the park alone. I stayed back in the room and really . . . let go. *shifty eyes* I got a lot of reading done while I was alone, so that was good, and the fireworks were fun to watch from the balcony.
Below are photos of food, Disney, more food, more Disney, more food, evidence of the girl getting her Fifty on, the view from our new hotel room, yet more food, fireworks, and the monster blister on my toe.
*I mean, what the fuck? Really? Leave your poorly written pr0n at home. You’re surrounded by children for Christ’s sake. At the very least take a page from this girl‘s book and use an ereader.
Anaheim – Monday 6/25
This week I am vacationing in California with Mary! I’m really excited, but I’m not sure she believes me because my excited face is pretty much like my bored face is pretty much like my tired/happy/mad/sad/glad face.
I arrived yesterday at 7:02 p.m. The flight was a little rough, but I was in an aisle seat close to the bathroom and had a cute boy sitting next to me so it made it kind of okay. My head was constantly pressurizing, almost as though the pilot couldn’t keep a steady elevation, and I had a headache for the rest of the evening.
Mary and I ate dinner at McCormick & Schmick’s, one of the restaurants I ate at while in Seattle last year. We started off with a bowl of clam chowder and oysters. I’d never had oysters from the shell before, but I must say I quite enjoyed them. For the main course I had seared sea scallops on a bed of spinach and crab hash, and for dessert we split a lemon soufflé. I also ordered a Bloody Mary, but it was terrible. Terrible. The meal cost a ridiculous amount of money and I’m sure it’s only the beginning.
After dinner we stopped at the hotel gift shop, where I bought water, sunscreen, and a small tube of Advil for a bargain deal of $723.
Once again I’m traveling without a traditional camera and will be relying on my iPhone to capture the memories. I would have brought it a long, but the charger is currently MIA.
RIP Kindle Keyboard, Hello Kindle Touch
Last weekend I was up north for Nick and my annual Dead Lake cabin weekend. I had just finished reading Insurgent (review coming soon) on my Kindle Keyboard, which I’ve had for a little over a year, when I set it on a lawn chair, and then proceeded to step on it while still on said lawn chair. I felt the resistance under my bare foot, but before I could react, there was a loud pop. At first I thought maybe it would be okay; the screen looked fine. But when I turned it on, the screen saver remained on top half of the screen.
Fortunately I had just finished the book, not that I couldn’t have read it on my iPad or iPhone, and I did have a paper book with me as well. Still, it angered me that I made such a stupid avoidable mistake. And I hadn’t even started drinking yet!
Immediately I started researching the current Kindle models so I could order a new one for delivery first thing Monday, because I’m nothing if not impatient. I didn’t want a Kindle Keyboard again. I never use the keyboard, so for me it added unnecessary bulk. It was hard to decide between the basic Kindle and Kindle Touch. I liked the weight and price of the Kindle, but the Kindle Touch had double the hard drive space (not that I think I would fill it, but you never know) and supported Audible files (not that I think I’d use it for listening to audio books, but again . . .). In the end I chose the Kindle Touch because my need to touch a word and get an instant definition trumped every other feature in existence.
I was oh-so-happy when I received my Touch, but the happiness went down the tubes almost instantly. After loading it full of stories, I started having issues. It was laggy, the pages would take forever to turn, stories added to collections wouldn’t actually be in the collection, the device would only halfway wake up, and a persistent application error kept haunting me. I did some hard restarts, and it always seemed to work for a while. This morning I decided to reset the factory settings, because I was sure support would make me do that, and if when they replaced my Kindle I’d have to start from scratch with my books anyway. From the things I read online (apparently this is a common issue with the Touch), the restore worked for some but not all.
So far I’ve been lucky. I reloaded my books and have been checking it periodically for the past few hours and it seems to be working okay. My fingers are crossed. I really like it, so hopefully it doesn’t give me any more problems. I’m kind of bitter that it didn’t work right out of the box—no device straight from the factory should require a restore. I feel bad for all the non-tech savvy people who receive faulty electronics.
Do you read ebooks? What device(s) do you use?
